Frequently Asked Questions

Traveling with a ferry to a nearby island can be an amazing experience! And we want to make this easy! We hereby list the ten most common issues that our customers face:

1. What is AEGEAN | Book a ferry?

AEGEAN | Book a ferry is an online booking platform for ferry tickets developed and operated by Ferryhopper in collaboration with AEGEAN. It offers AEGEAN passengers the option to continue their travel to the Greek islands that there is no airport connection. AEGEAN | Book a ferry offers the ability to book a ferry route that fully meets your travel needs and budget. It provides quickly, easily, and in the most cost-effective way online search and reservation for ferry tickets across most mainland and island ports.

2. Where can I travel to?

We provide you with the ability to book from over 30 ferry operators and to more than 140 destinations in the Aegean, Ionian, and Adriatic Sea.

3. Are ferry tickets the same price as those of the ferry operators?

Yes, prices of ferry tickets on AEGEAN | Book a ferry as well as special offers are set by the ferry operators themselves.

4. Are there any additional costs/service fees?

A service fee is an additional charge that may be applied to the ticket value, covering several operational costs such as affiliation services, customer service, bank transaction costs etc. If any additional service fee is to be applied upon the price of your ticket, it will be clearly displayed and explained to you prior to any payment procedure.

5. Infants & children: Do I need to buy a ticket?

Each company has its own definition of infants and children. In all cases, a ticket needs to be issued for the infant or child. In order to see the specific discount for this type of ferry tickets, you have to add an adult passenger first and then add your child or infant as a second passenger. Then, you will be able to choose the corresponding discount and the total price will be adjusted automatically

6. How do I get student discounts on ferry tickets?

On international routes, a discount is offered to all students of Greek Universities, as well as to the International Student Card (ISIC) cardholders. On routes within Greece, student discounts are provided for students of Greek Universities that have a valid Greek student ID. Some companies (e.g. Blue Star Ferries, Minoan Lines, Superfast Ferries, ANEK Lines, Saronic Ferries) also provide discounts for students holding an ISIC card.

7. How can I be sure that my booking has been successful?

Once the booking procedure is successfully completed, you will be directed to the booking confirmation page, which includes a summary of the trip you booked. In addition, you will receive a confirmation email to your mailbox. You can also check your booking status at any time after booking completion from the My Booking page.

If the booking was unsuccessful for any reason, you will be redirected to an error page explaining why your booking attempt has failed. If you are not sure why this has happened or you don’t understand the error message, you may contact us. Please copy and paste the error text in your message as this will help us give you the right advice as fast as possible.

8. Change ticket name

It is important to be careful when you fill in your details and avoid typos or mistakes. The typical procedure for changing a reservation is to cancel the issued ticket and book a new one with the correct details. In domestic routes, the authorities are not strict regarding misspellings and it is unlikely that you will encounter a problem upon ticket control during boarding. Please note though that on international trips or discounted tickets, you should be more careful as a mistake could cause confusion at the port, resulting, in the worst case in a difficulty to board, or less dramatically, in needing to pay the full fare.

9. Maximum number of passengers and vehicles I can book

AEGEAN | Book a ferry allows you to book up to 4 trips at once for up to 9 people travelling with up to 4 vehicles. If you want to travel in a bigger party, the reservation procedure will have to be repeated multiple times.

10. Ticket Collection

The booking confirmation number of your reservation includes all the details required to collect your tickets but is not considered a ticket!

As most of the ferry operators do not support electronic tickets (or e-ticket), passengers need to collect the paper coupons of their tickets before their trip. All the details needed (reservation number, ticket number, ticket collection points, etc) are included in the booking confirmation page and e-mail. Ticket collection options:

  • From Ferryhopper offices, located in the center of Athens: 28is Oktovriou (Patision) str., 25, 104 32, Athens, Greece.
  • From several collection points that serve your departure port. You can find all the available collection points, before booking a ticket, on the booking page when selecting the option Collect from the departure port. After a successful booking, a list of these collection points will also be sent to you in the booking confirmation email. These points include ticket booths at ports or the central agencies of each company (usually located near the port).
  • Delivered to your hotel reception and collected upon arrival. The extra cost of this service is calculated before payment.
  • Delivered to your home/office address via courier. The shipping cost for delivery to the selected address is calculated before proceeding to the payment.

From the moment you collect your tickets and you are in physical possession of them, then any cancellation or modification can be processed only upon the return of the physical tickets either to our offices or to the collaborating travel agency of your ferry operator.

11. Which documents are required for travel?

As the ferry personnel or the port authorities may ask you to prove that you are the legal ticket holder, we recommend that you always carry your passport, ID or any other relevant identification document. For routes between two countries, your identity card or your passport is obligatory both for booking a ticket and for getting on the ferry. In the case of discounted tickets, you will be asked to provide your valid discount card.

12. What time should I arrive at the port?

The standard recommended is 1 hour before your departure time. This may vary a bit, depending on the port you are leaving from. Major ports, such as Piraeus, Rafina, Patras, Ancona, Brindisi, Heraklion, etc. are so large that you could have up to a 20-minute walk from the port entrance to your boarding gate. This is why we recommend arriving at the port 1 hour before departure, especially if you have a car.

13. Are there any luggage restrictions?

You can carry up to 50 kg or 1 cubic meter of hand luggage free of charge. If you would like to carry more luggage or special sports equipment, please consider using the cargo services that are also available during boarding.

14. Can I modify/cancel my booking?

Ferry tickets can be modified and canceled according to the policy of Ferryhopper - the ferry booking engine and the ferry operator. Unfortunately, we cannot offer any special deals on top of what the ferry companies themselves offer up. You will, of course, be fully covered by the official cancellation and change policies of each ferry operator. A modification fee of up to 6€ (euros) per booking is applied. As this procedure is considered as a cancellation and rebooking process, cancellation charges may apply based on each ferry operator’s policy.

Please note that since modifications require manual intervention and there are deadlines set by the ferry operators, any online request can be processed only within working hours and up to 96 hours before the scheduled departure.

Working hours: Weekdays 09.00 - 18.00 and Saturday 09.00 - 14.00

Otherwise, in case the requested action needs to be completed out of our working hours, you are kindly requested to visit the local agent of your ferry operator (listed in your booking confirmation e-mail) so that they proceed with the requested modification. Of course, in case you contact us in less than 96 hours before your scheduled trip, we will do our best to help you but we cannot guarantee that the online handling of your modification request will be satisfied.

Notes:
1. Please keep in mind that modification requests cannot be addressed via phone. You are kindly requested to address your request through our contact form
2. In case you have already collected your physical tickets, these should be returned (either to our offices or to the collaborating travel agency of your ferry operator) in order for any modification to be performed

15. Why Is My Ticket Non-refundable?

Some ticket types such as special offer tickets are non-refundable and non-amendable. Also, no refund is provided in case you request a cancellation at a time that does not comply with the ferry company’s cancellation terms and deadlines. Moreover, no refund is provided in case your tickets are printed and collected, unless you return them to the locations described in our cancellations section.

The refund terms of your ticket are governed by the ferry company’s policy and not by AEGEAN | Book a ferry. Before you purchase your tickets, you are asked to read and consent with the terms and conditions of the website as well as those of the ferry company; reading these terms is a very important step to understanding the service that you purchase.

16. What if I have lost my ticket?

Unless you have an electronic ticket, then we are sorry to say that without presenting the physical tickets, you will NOT be allowed to travel. The paper coupon of your ticket is required to get onboard and cannot be replaced by the reservation or the ticket number. In case of loss, you are required to buy a new ticket and fill a request for ticket loss at the local agency of your ferry operator. Afterwards, and on condition that the lost tickets have not been used within a number of months, your ferry operator will examine your case and contact you directly to inform you of the outcome and the possibility to provide you with tickets of equal value. Please bear in mind this is not a cancellation, they will only replace the tickets, not refund you. However, this depends on the ferry company’s decision.
